House Committee Passes Insane Vape Tax Bill
A bipartisan group of House committee members passed a very insane and very expensive tax bill on nicotine Wednesday. If passed by the House and Senate and signed into law it would add $20 to the price of a 60mL bottle of 12mg e-liquid.
They used the usual "protect the children" fear mongering as inspiration and seem entirely unconcerned about the incredibly dangerous (and likely lethal) black market that would inevitably develop around vaping.
The bill would tax nicotine content at a rate of $50.33 per 1,810 mg of nicotine - or roughly 2.78 cents per milligram. For comparison, cigarettes are taxed at $50.33 per 1000 (about $1 per pack at retail). If you're trying to get people to stop smoking, you are very much doing it wrong.
